It’s time to bike commute! The Santa Monica Bike Center’s new commuter bike loaner program initiated in August 2012 provides anyone working near downtown Santa Monica with all of the necessities to taste commuting by bike. Participants who enroll in the free 2-week trial program are provided with a fully equipped Trek SoHo commuter bike including: a rear rack, fenders, panniers, lights, U-lock, and an optional child seat if needed. In addition, participants get free access to the Santa Monica Bike Center’s parking, showers and lockers during the trial period. The Bike Center will provide route planning and tips for making a smooth transition to commuting by bike. And there’s more! Participants who commute to work by bike at least three days each week during the trial period are eligible for a discount on the purchase of a new bike at Helen’s Cycles in Santa Monica, plus the Bike Center will throw in a 3-month membership free of charge. What are you waiting for? Contact the Bike Center now to reserve a bike for a two-week trial, if you already ride to work, tell your friends and co-workers about the program to help them get started.
The goal of the program is to get at least 100 participants in a twelve month period. Overall, the Bike Center hopes to get more people out of their cars and on bikes. In fact, whatever your objection to biking is, the Bike Center will help provide an answer. They will even provide a “bike buddy” to help participants plan their route, and ride in their first time. The commuter bike loaner program is a great way to try bike commuting without the upfront financial commitment.
The first participants have all had unique and positive experiences with the program. Shane, who works with the city, biked a total of 39 miles during his two-week trial! He biked nearly every day and saw immediate benefits; “I noticed that I arrived places with a better attitude, more relaxed, and with a pep in my step.” Not sitting in traffic, and getting a brief burst of cardio, left Shane feeling awake and refreshed. Since completing the program mid-August he is looking for a new bike so he can start biking to the office at least a few days a week. His experience also affected a coworker who has started biking several times a week all the way from Redondo Beach to Santa Monica!
Another participant, Teri, clocked in 64 miles during her two-week trial even though she has not ridden a bike in 35 years! She used the bike to and from work, to run errands, and for pleasure. “I especially enjoyed riding on the beach bike path which was a new experience for me.” She is definitely going to be biking from now on. “I would highly recommend the program and thank Ron Durgin of the Bike Center for bringing this innovative program to Santa Monica.”

The victim of a hit and run (car vs bicycle) on December 13, 2011 (case #110 718 955) was riding southbound on Curson crossing Pico with a fully green light. He was hit by a car traveling westbound on Pico at 40 to 50 miles an hour. He was thrown across the intersection and suffered broken bones in the hand and wrist as well as a fractured tibia and a torn PCL in the knee. The driver never braked or turned away. The injuries sustained are life changing and have confined the victim to a wheelchair for at least a few more months.

On Sunday, October 16, 2011, a small group of cub scouts and parents from Bear Den Pack 59 in Mar Vista came to the Santa Monica Bicycle Campus to learn basic bicycle safety from League Cycling Instructor, Ron Durgin of Sustainable Streets.
After reviewing helmet safety and completing an ABC Quick Check on their bikes, the scouts practiced riding in a straight line, turning and signaling. The scouts then practiced yielding to cross traffic when entering a road or path from a driveway. The beach bicycle path provided a perfect scenario for these young riders to learn this important lesson.
We finished the day with some thrilling turtle races and some tasty Clif Bar snacks. Thank you Pack 59 scouts and parents for the opportunity to help the boys earn their bicycle badge.
SANTA MONICA, CA, SEPTEMBER 20, 2011: In an effort to reduce our school’s carbon footprint, the Samohi Solar Alliance started Bike It! Day four years ago. On Bike It! Day, SSA challenges the students of the Santa Monica School District to “leave the car at home,” and seek other methods of transportation to and from school. Biking, walking, skateboarding, and taking the bus are all encouraged. The most recent Bike It! Days saw huge results. Linwood E. Howe elementary school in Culver City is hosting a 3-hour bike repair and education program on Saturday, October 2, 2010, in preparation for Walk/Bike to School Week.
Sustainable Streets will be on hand to deliver its education program, Raising Smart Cyclists, for parents to learn ways to encourage their kids to bike to school and keep them safe in the process.
Culver City Police will deliver a presentation to the kids on bicycle safety, followed by some fun on the playground with police dog Scout.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, through the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, is pleased to inform you that Sustainable Streets has been selected as a demonstration site for the Pedestrian Safety Workshop: A Focus on Older Adults. We received many strong applications and your planned activities, existing partnerships and commitment to improving walking conditions for older adults in your community distinguished your application.
Over the course of the year-long project, your organization will receive technical assistance from pedestrian safety experts and time to network with other communities who are also teaching the workshop. In return, you will be teaching the Workshop four times, participating in monthly conference calls, providing brief quarterly status reports, completing the evaluation components of the project, and writing a brief final report on your community’s involvement in the project.
